Event producers needed help transforming a huge blank hall into a fully immersive, movie-quality exhibition space for the Jurassic World franchise. 

Our job was to create complete light control within a massive space, approximately the size of an aircraft hangar, constructed with translucent PVC wall and roof sheets. 

The project involved designing, manufacturing, and installing large block-out panels, approximately 5m wide and 25m long, within existing steel frames, navigating around various services and obstructions at roof height.

Unique challenges

The main challenge was designing a system that could be quickly manufactured and installed while being flexible enough to work around structural elements such as frame braces, cables, fire services, emergency exits, and even animatronic dinosaurs.

Working at heights of up to 10 metres, teams used Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) to install the panels. Careful coordination was required to avoid damaging infrastructure like cables and fire sensors while ensuring the safety of the crew below.

The installation was carried out alongside rehearsals for the FIFA Women’s World Cup ceremonies, demanding efficient coordination between day and night shifts. The team, consisting of 10-14 members, meticulously sealed every potential light entry point, traversing the entire structure multiple times to ensure complete blackout conditions.

Supply chain management presented its own challenges, as the large quantities of materials like Velcro and webbing led to local shortages. Despite these obstacles, the team successfully delivered the project on time, ensuring the space was ready for the Universal Studios production team.

This project was Internal Furnishings, Domestic & Commercial – WINNER at the 2024 Specialised Textiles Awards.
