PROJECT

Project specifications

St Joseph’s School, Rosebery, required an aesthetically pleasing, structurally challenging architectural entranceway. Designed by Neeson Murcutt Neille, the attention to detail on the steelwork was exceptional.

Unique challenges

The height, shape, and footprint of the design, along with the desire for minimalistic steel connections, made this project a challenge.

After several meetings and extensive in-house analysis using AUTOCAD, we proposed a safe, structurally sound design that aligned well with the architects vision.

Installation took place during one of Sydney’s wettest Decembers, complicating transportation and site conditions.

Crane operations were initially hampered by boggy ground, and subsequent fabric installation in January also faced challenges with equipment getting bogged.

Solution

Despite these obstacles, our team successfully installed the impressive entrance structure. The project was completed in collaboration with Versatile Structures from Queensland.

Extensive analysis and multiple redesigns ensured the structure met both aesthetic and structural requirements.

The ridge line was crucial, necessitating visual continuity with connections along each rafter. This required two cranes for installation within a tight work area.

Diablo connections were used for minimal visual change, and a tension track system maintained fabric alignment with the steel, creating a hard-surface appearance that complemented the adjacent building’s architectural lines.

Nicknamed “Big Blue,” the impressive structure is a testament to meticulous planning and execution.
