PROJECT
Project specifications
In March 2025, we were commissioned to deliver a standout centerpiece for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, Victoria.
The client wanted more than shade: they wanted a landmark precinct hub that enhanced comfort, increased dwell time, and created a clear visual “totem” within the event’s Melbourne Junction theme.
With a 1,000m² footprint, and just weeks to complete design, fabrication, and installation, our task was to blend architectural inspiration with rapid execution.
Unique challenges
The site was a cricket field, which meant no permanent footings could be used. Engineering solutions had to address “skating and sway” with ballast blocks while ensuring no ground damage.
Adding to the complexity, the design needed to echo Melbourne’s architectural icons, fit event branding, and stand out visually across the track.
On top of these constraints, the timeline meant we needed to coordinate multiple suppliers and subcontractors to complete 1,850 hours of work before the Grand Prix deadline.
Custom Challenges
We drew inspiration from Federation Square’s geometric facades and glass atrium roof to create a 10m-high structure clad entirely in fabric.
Using a combination of shade materials and PVC, we crafted both a roof and façade that delivered shade, airflow, and unique light patterns.
The roof’s block-out design projected playful shapes onto the ground, engaging families and encouraging longer stays. To conceal bulky ballast, we built planter-box seating that blended seamlessly with the fabric facades.
By colouring the entire structure to match the event’s branding, the pavilion became a vibrant precinct landmark.
Completed on time and on budget, the structure boosted patron comfort and spending, achieving the client’s goal of transforming Melbourne Junction into a premium destination within the event.
